Recently Apple Inc launched one of its brand-new keyboards. Apple followed its simplism style as usual, even more simple as they adopted a new layout as below.
Differing from the most common QWERT layout, the new rearranged the key places, why makes such an arrangement? Let’s compare both. Instead of A,S,D,F on which we rest our left four fingers, the four keys of A,O,E,U take the position in the new layout, and I is put next to U, after that it is D, and then from left to right continually followed by H,T,N,S. All of them are most frequently used keys when we input to PC.
In another word, all the keys have been designed according to the typing frequency and dependency, e.g. all the vowels and the most often used consonants have been placed at the home row where the keys can easily reached by the fingers, that is also why the most central positions have to be left to letter I and D, so as to make less finger move and reduce errors, increase typing speed, finally reduces repetitive strain injuries.
People think it a faster and more ergonomic solution than the QWERTY layout, and named it as Dvorak keyboard after one of the inventors Dr. August Dvorak.
It’s said the fastest typing record was set with Dvorak Keyboard. As for Guinness World Records, Barbara Blackburn hit the record in the year of 2005.She kept typing 50 minutes in a row at the average speed of 150 words per minute, the peak speech even up to 212 words every minute.
It’s said to be the fastest typing keyboard, do you agree?
